I am pleased to be able to tell you that Winston has made it safely to Kuwait. He will now spend a few days with Karen whilst his papers are prepared to send him to the UK.

A special thanks has to go to Twiggy and Lone for fostering Winston in Basrah for the last couple of weeks. Twiggy tells me that Winston made himself quite at home and I am sure both he and Lone will miss the little man but they are happy he is heading to the UK to his new forever home with Kelly. And of course, a huge thanks to Karen for once again assisting with the paperwork etc that goes along with sending these animals out of Kuwait.

Dori the 3 legged cat had her last surgery a few days ago. Previously she had undergone surgery twice in Iraq to amputate her back leg following her accident but the surgery was not done properly and she was left with half a leg that would have caused her with problems as she grew. So, a couple of days ago she had a complete amputation done in Kuwait and at the same time she got speyed.

Dori is well on the road to recovery now and is doing well and is happy. She will remain under the careful watch of Karen and Steph in Kuwait now until May when her pet passport is complete and she can finally go home without a need to enter quarantine.

Dori below after her surgery.

You may know by now that unfortunately Sal the puppy passed away last week. Sal caught a nasty virus that is currently spreading through the country and he was just to small to fight it.

Sal was a real character, a happy go lucky dog and he will be deeply missed by his owner, Alex as well as all of those who had been following his journey.

It breaks out hearts when these things happen, Sal was so close to coming home to his soldier. Things like this make us even more determined to make a difference and I hope you will continue to follow on our journey.

Below is a tribute to Sal from Lena (Oso’s Mom).

Good news!! Bobby has now made it safely to the Afghan shelter. He spent a couple of days with me and completely ransacked my room and helped himself to my slippers prior to going to the shelter where he is now being prepared for his journey back to the UK.

Guts also arrived with me a day after Bobby did, sadly Guts was very sick with what appears to be the same sickness that Oso and Lola had and that sadly killed little Sal. It was touch and go for 2 days, but after 2 nights of no sleep whilst I administered fluids and anti sickness drugs I am pleased to tell you that Guts is now on the road to recovery and will be on his way to Canada soon.

Some pictures of Bobby and Guts.

Guts was originally rescued by an American platoon south of Kandahar city. When it was time for them to move out it was decided by their chain of command that they could not take Guts with them. The dogs at the camp they were at had all been showing signs of distemper and soon all of the dogs were going to be put down. Guts really had nowhere to go so lucky for him we happened to be in the camp for the day. Guts wandered into the kitchen tent and, not to some peoples liking, we fed him alot of bacon. He ate so much that his stomach was bloated (hence the name Guts). We couldn’t leave him behind to get put down so we brought him with us to a small outpost where about 20 of us were staying. We didn’t have any dog food so he ate rations and junk food just like the rest of us. He was still very little (only about four or five weeks old) so we had to protect him from other dogs. Even the cats would beat him up. We gave him a wash basin and blankets for a bed but he usually whined until someone would pick him up onto their cot. Guts has long since outgrown his bed but not our cots. Guts is still a member of our platoon. He is between three and four months old and everyone is hoping to get him back to Canada as soon as possible.

Help us to get Guts home to Canada by donating here

Over the last few years I have operated Baghdad Animal Rescue more or less on my own as and when the cry for help has come in from soldiers and contractors working and serving in Iraq who have fallen for a four legged friend they cannot bear to leave behind. With the backing of a fantastic supporter base we have been responsible for many successful rescues – some fairly easy and others nail biting last minute operations that have been hit and miss until we have finally got the dog or cat on the plane bound for its new home.

I knew I always wanted to expand the operation of Baghdad Animal rescue but needed to meet the right people with the motivation and drive who could help me take it forward.

And then I met Pen from the Nowzad Dogs charity. Pen was a Royal Marine who whilst serving in Afghanistan met and befriended an Afghan fighting dog that he had no intention of leaving behind when his tour of duty ended.

Pen was so taken with the plight of the Afghan strays that he founded the Nowzad Dogs charity to promote animal welfare in Afghanistan.

After chatting and discussing ideas we have decided that the best avenue for us to take to promote animal welfare in Iraq and Afghanistan is for us to join forces. So as of now Baghdad Animal Rescue is now the Iraq operational wing of the Nowzad Dogs charity.

So what does that mean for your donations?

All accounting is now under the wing of a UK registered charity (non-profit) – All monies donated via this website will be used for general animal rescues and welfare promotion in either Iraq or Afghanistan unless you specifically tell us how you want us to use your donation.

Baghdad Animal Rescue now has an official postal address: Nowzad Dogs, PO Box 3495, Corsham, SN13 7AE, UK.

I am becoming a trustee of Nowzad Dogs so will be involved in the day to day running of the charity making sure Pen is kept on his toes.

If you have any questions about this merge please feel free to email me or Pen.

A voice for the animals of Iraq and Afghanistan that have no voice has just got a step closer – I hope you will continue to follow us on this journey. Life is too short to sit around and do nothing!

We are also pleased to report that having spent a week or so at Pasado’s Safe Haven having her health checks, Oso, is now home with her family and settling well. Pictures below of her and her new siblings.

Lola arrived at the Afghan shelter a week or so ago and is now almost ready to start the next leg of her journey home.

We are also still trying to raise funding for Kandy. Please tell people about her and help us to raise what we need to send her home to the UK.

Donna and Joey will also soon be on their way to Canada where they will both be fostered until new homes are found for them.

Winston has also started his journey home. He is currently being fostered by a colleague in Um Qasr after being moved from the Naval Base but will be making his way to a new life in the next couple of weeks. As you can see, he is more than comfortable with his foster family.

That’s all I have for this update. You can see we are getting busier all the time so it goes without saying that your support has been instrumental in helping us to make this work and we hope you will continue to support us on future rescues.

Please also remember we still need funding to make it happen, so tell everyone about us and help us get donations!
