Good news! Sandbag, Dirtbag and Royal were delivered safely to the safe house in Baghdad on 20th August 2009. Unfortunately, Hesco managed to escape from her carrier on the day they were collected and could not be caught so a mission is planned at a later date to get her to the safe house as well. Sandbag and Dirtbag are well settled at the safe house and although a little thin their appetites are good so they should gain some weight in no time and they love being around people.

We have now managed to confirm that Sandbag and Hesco are still in Um Qasr and they will be moved to a safe location in the very near future. In the course of trying to locate Sandbag and Hesco we were also made aware of of Dirtbag who we believe to be the son of Sandbag so now Dirtbag will also be included on the mission to get them home. Today I received an email from the Navy in Um Qasr telling me about Royal.

As you are all aware now I am currently involved in the Rescue of Sandbag and Hesco, the cat and dog that were adopted as the British Army’s mascots while they were based in Southern Iraq. Finally, I have been able to establish comms with a US Soldier based down there that tells me he has had sight of them and they are looking a bit dirty and bedraggled but are otherwise fine. Sandbag & Hesco have actually increased in numbers and there is another dog called Dirtbag who is Sandbag’s son, we would like to try and get him out as well. Dirtbag is very scared of the Iraqi’s so this puts him in more danger as he barks at them a lot.
